In many rural areas of Sri Lanka, numerous young adults face significant barriers in building their lives after completing secondary education.  Challenges such as a lack of access to schools, financial constraints, unstable family environments, and other obstacles leave many without the essential skills or educational foundation needed for a successful future.

Youth Community Colleges were established to address this critical need. These institutions provide opportunities for young adults beyond secondary school age to develop life and work skills.  Courses offered include basic computer education, English language classes, professional seminars on career options, and training in specific trades.

Karadiyanaru, a region in the Batticaloa West area, witnessed the opening of one such college, “Manitha Neyam Community College”, on October 18, 2024.  This initiative was inaugurated with the approval of the Batticaloa West Zonal Educational Department. The opening ceremony was led by Mr. K. Aravinthan, the U.S. representative of the Manitha Neyam Trust, accompanied by his spouse. Other dignitaries included Mr. Y. Sanjeevan, Deputy Education Director for Planning at the Zonal Education Office, and Mr. K. Pratheeswaran, Executive Director of the Vivekananda Community Foundation.

The event was attended by a wide array of community members, including local priests, school principals, representatives of charitable organizations, community supporters, staff, and trainees. Their presence highlighted the shared commitment to empowering local youth.

A second one, “Puhalidam Community College”, was inaugurated in Arayampathi, with the event attended by the Arayampathi Regional Secretary and representatives of the Vivekananda Community Foundation on the same day.

This project, managed by the Vivekananda Community Foundation and funded by our organization, aims to empower young adults and provide them with the tools to build a successful future.  We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our donors worldwide for supporting this meaningful cause.
