The burning and destruction of the Jaffna Public Library nearly four decades ago was a scar in the history of Sri Lanka and an attack on the cultural heritage of the Tamil community.
Although the Library has arisen from the ashes , we should not only make sure that such an event never happens again, but also ensure the preservation of the historical documents in perpetuity through a process of digitization. MNT has partnered with the Jaffna Public Library and the Noolaham Foundation, an experienced local NGO, to ensure the digitization of documents, journals, books, and other relevant publications.
The Phase 1 of the project is expected to be completed in March 2024, enabling digital documents to be accessed remotely both in Sri Lanka and worldwide. This project will be of enormous benefit not only from a preservation perspective, but also to enable and encourage academic researchers worldwide to study and disseminate the cultural heritage.
