Participants: Mr. K. Aravinthan, Mrs. Vasantha Kandasamy & Mr. Krishnaraja Although our visit took place during the school holidays, we were impressed by the commitment of the teachers who made a special effort to welcome us and share their insights and concerns.
1. Highland College, Hatton (Grades 1–13)
This is one of the largest schools in the region, known for sending many students to Sri Lankan universities, particularly in fields such as medicine and engineering. While the school appears adequately funded overall, its unique topography and the scattered layout of its buildings pose logistical challenges. The school has requested financial assistance to construct a set of student toilets near one of the classroom blocks.
2. Fordyce Tamil Vidyalayam, Dickoya (Grades 1–11)
A recipient of a smart panel from MNT, this school is struggling with severe infrastructure issues. Several buildings are in poor condition, and the school currently lacks functioning computers for student use.
3. Mariah Tamil Maha Vidyalayam, Lindula (Grades 1–11)
Also a recipient of a smart panel from MNT, this school benefits from a well-equipped technology classroom and a capable technology teacher, creating a strong foundation for digital learning.
4. Albion Tamil Vidyalayam, Agrapatana (Grades 1–6)
This small primary school has received backpacks for all students from MNT. The teachers were enthusiastic and showed strong engagement with the students’ needs.
5. Kaipugalla Tamil Vidyalayam, Poonduloya (Grades 1–8)
For over two years, we have supported a vegetable garden at this school, aiming to teach students practical agricultural skills and contribute vegetables for their daily meals. The initiative continues to be well-received and impactful.
6. Mayfield Tamil Vidyalayam, Kotagala (Grades 1–11)
Located deep within an estate, this school is accessible only via approximately 4 km of very poor roads. Inspired by Kaipugalla’s success, Mayfield is in the early stages of establishing its own vegetable garden to promote food sustainability and hands-on learning.
